'PAT' Testing (now referred to as EET)

ALL electrical items provided for client's/employees use need to be tested. This is any item that 'plugs-in' such as (but not limited to):

  • reading lamps

  • irons

  • power tools

  • musical instruments

  • TVs

  • games consoles

  • computers/monitors

  • kettles

  • etc

Also included are appliances that are 'wired-in' (ie it may not have a plug), and/or built in to cabinets, such as:

  • Fridge

  • Oven/hob

  • hand-drier in a toilet

  • Washing machine/tumble drier

Formal Visual Inspection

This comprises a detailed visual check of the casing, cable and plug of the item, including dismantling if possible and practical. We check for damage, signs of over-heating, loose connections; and that plugs and cables conform to the current standards.

Electrical Testing

We use a dedicated testing machine to test the integrity of the wiring system within the appliance. This verifies that there are no faults, and that if there were a fault during normal use that no injury by electric shock can occur.

We will need to disconnect each item from the power for a brief period in order to test.

Reporting and Labelling

A full report is prepared, listing every item tested and whether it is safe for continued use. Any faults/damage/unsafe items are brought to your notice and further action recommended. Each item is also labelled 'PASS' or 'FAIL'. Failed items should be removed from service until the problem is rectified.

We will also discuss with you the period between tests for each item. This will vary according to certain factors. E.g. a power drill used outside will be tested more frequently than a desk lamp.
